August is known for being hot and humid around here, but that shouldn’t stop you from having a good time this month! Here are a few of our favorite events to help you stay cool while experiencing Lynchburg.
Academy Youth Theatre Presents: A Wrinkle in Time
Place: Academy Center of the Arts
Dates: August 9 at 7pm, August 10 at 2pm
One of literature’s most beloved tales comes to life in this production, performed by talented area youth actors.
Chamomile and Whiskey with Steal the Prize
Place: The Glass House
Date: August 17 7pm
This local band from Nelson County will take the stage at The Glass House for a night of “an eclectic blend of raucous-roots, drunken-Irish, potent-Americana, and mountain-funk”. Pro tip: Grab dinner at The Water Dog before heading across the street for the show!
Pre-LOCKN’ Party with Ben Harper and Trombone Shorty
Place: Riverfront Park
Date: August 21, 7 pm
Kick off a weekend of love and music with Ben Harper and Trombone Shorty. Presented by City Auditorium, this stop on the Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals tour is what summer was made for: live music in Downtown Lynchburg.

LOCKN’ Festival
Place: Infinity Downs & Oak Ridge Farm (Arrington, VA)
Date: August 22-25
LOCKN’ celebrates its 5th year in 2019, and it’s sure to be one of the best! This music festival, started by a group of passionate music lovers, is the ultimate atmosphere to enjoy live music. Whether you choose to camp on the grounds or choose to shuttle in from Downtown Lynchburg, it’s sure to be a weekend you won’t forget.
Southern Accents: A Tribute to Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers
Place: The Glass House
Date: August 30, 7 pm
Tom Petty is known for his hits such as “Free Fallin’” and “I Won’t Back Down”, but also for the way he shaped American folk by introducing a rock style that it had never before experienced. The Southern Accents bring these hits and more to life with 100% live music (no backing tracks here!). We guarantee your dad will be into this, so take him out for a night on the town.
Lynchburg Half Marathon & 5K
Place: Start/finish at Percival’s Island
Date: August 31, 7:30 am
Take part in the last race of the Lynchburg Road Runners Summer Series with this classic race! This out and back course features all of the highlights of the Percival’s Island trail, including Fertilizer Road. For those not up to a half marathon, the 5K distance offers a fast (and flat!) option.
Museum After Dark: Harry Potter Edition
Who says adults can’t have fun at Amazement Square? This year’s Museum After Dark will allow adults to be sorted into Hogwarts houses, grab a glass of Butterbeer from Three Broomsticks and even show off their spells at The Dueling Club.
