Father’s Day is fast approaching, and Lynchburg is full of opportunities to make Dad’s day! Whether he’s a history buff, adventure lover, grillmeister or a man who enjoys some peace and quiet, there are plenty of options for celebrating him in our beautiful city. Here are some ideas for a celebratory itinerary that will make him feel truly special.
Grab Lunch At County Smoak
Start your day’s schedule on the right foot with lunch from one of Lynchburg’s fine barbecue restaurants, County Smoak. Owned and operated by Ken and Jessica Hess, both of whom are classically trained chefs, this recent addition to Lynchburg’s already incredible list of barbecue restaurants is definitely something to write home about. With 15 years of experience mastering the art of barbecuing and winning World Championships, this family’s barbecue is sure to make your mouth start watering as soon as you smell it. This restaurant currently offers its food for takeout, so you can treat Dad by joining him in a savory lunch of robust and smoky meat flavors.
Hang Out At Peaks View Park
Once you’ve picked up your barbecue, take it on over to Peaks View Park and have a seat on the lush green hillside, on a bench or under a pavilion, and chow down. Follow up your lunch by challenging Dad to a game of frisbee golf under the trees or going for a leisurely bike ride along the park trails or the Ivy Creek Greenway. After you’re done having some chilled-out fun in the sun, it’ll be time for your next activity!
Go On A Climbing Adventure
Now that gyms have been able to reopen to an extent, you can take Dad to Rise Up Climbing and give him a chance to show those rock walls who’s boss! See how quickly he can move up a path of colored handholds (he might surprise you!), and show him the specific climbing routes that the professional climbers at Rise Up create and compete on. If he’s really down for a challenge, introduce him to bouldering, and if he wants, the staff can show him how to belay for someone who’s climbing. Maybe you can even belay each other as part of the adventure!
Finish Off At Depot Grille
To finish off the day, take Dad out for dinner and some drinks on the porch of Depot Grille, just yards away from the banks of the James River. Enjoy some of their signature dishes, like juicy bison burgers, fresh salads or tender seafood. Then sip some specialty wine or beer as you chat and watch the trains go by in front of the James River and the steadfast Langley Fountain. As the sun sets behind the hills of Lynchburg, you can remind Dad of what he means to you and let him know just how much you love and appreciate him.
We hope you have a safe and enjoyable Father’s Day, Lynchburg!
