Lynchburg Grows/Doyle-Schenkel Greenhouses Tour

October 9, 2022 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm

Free
  • « First Fridays Mini-Exhibit “African American Sororities”
  • Hocus Pocus Movie Night at the PAC! »

Explore one of Lynchburg’s most interesting and historic industrial sites: the Lynchburg Grows urban farm, formerly home of Doyle Florist, H.R. Schenkel, Inc., Thornhill Wagon Works, and Allen-Morrison Sign Company. The Doyle and Schenkel greenhouses played a paramount role in Virginia’s cut flower industry for most of the 20th century.

The tour covers several of the 200-foot-long greenhouses, the original brick power plant used to heat the greenhouses, and other points of interest on the 6.8-acre site. Today the historic site has been refurbished by the non-profit Lynchburg Grows to provide healthy food and job opportunities for individuals with disabilities.

Tours are free, but reservations are required in advance. Call (434) 455–6226 or visit LynchburgMuseum.org/walking-tours to reserve your spot. Each tour is limited to 20 people. Tour includes walking off-road on irregular terrain, so please wear comfortable walking shoes.
