Towering over downtown Lynchburg, Court House Hill has served as the civic, religious, and legal heart of the city since the 19th century. But beneath the grand architecture and the brick-paved streets lies a darker, more somber history. For generations, this hill was the epicenter of local capital punishment—a place where the law meted out its final, absolute sentences before massive public crowds.
Join us after hours for Ghosts of Gallows Hill, a gripping, historical walking tour that traces the footsteps of the condemned. Guided by the flickering glow of lanterns, we will gather on the historic steps of the Old Courthouse at the Lynchburg Museum, standing precisely where high-profile trials sealed the fates of the city’s most notorious prisoners.
From there, we will navigate the historic legal district by lantern light, examining meticulously documented court records, desperate jailbreak attempts, and the grim realities of 19th-century justice.
