Peaks of Otter

Peaks of Otter Visitor Center, Blue Ridge Parkway, Bedford, VA, USA
Get Directions

The Peaks of Otter – Sharp Top, Flat Top, and Harkening Hill – have dominated the view in this region of Virginia for centuries, first attracting the attention of Native Americans who saw the area as a rich hunting ground. Famous naturalists and such notable historic figures as Thomas Jefferson and Robert E. Lee wrote about or visited the Peaks of Otter during their lives. The summit of Flat Top or Sharp Top offers a unique opportunity to enjoy spectacular scenic vistas and sunrises. Interpretative programs, wildlife exhibits, walking trails, self guided wildflower walks, picnic areas, campground, restaurant and lodge are available in this developed area of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Shuttle bus service close to the summit of Sharp Top is available.

It’s all here from a leisurely stroll around Abbott Lake to a challenging hike up Sharp Top Mountain, to night skies viewing and special events. There is something for everyone at Peaks and the surrounding regions.

Spectacular views from the summit of Sharptop. If you are feeling ambitious you can hike there from the base. Otherwise you can take a shuttle which will drop you off just below the summit and you can walk from there.

A must see for nature enthusiasts. As one of the highest peaks in Virginia the panoramic views from the top are breathtaking! I go at least once a year.

Unlike some of the reviewers this is listed as just the peaks. Not the restaurant. Not the hotel. Which might I add is in the mountains to the one who complains of cell phone reception. 😧Anyhow for a traveler/backpacker/hiking loving/out doorsy this is a must see spot. The views are a necessity especially up the trails. There are 3 to choose from with different levels of burn in the thighs. Technically 4 but I don't count the path around the lake like some do. All are pretty in there own way and I can't knock a single one.You owe it to yourself to enjoy the outdoors. To breathe in fresh air and get the exercise your body craves. Please visit this beautiful piece of nature. It's truly one of my favorite spots.
