The Monacan Indian Nation is one of the oldest continuously existing Indigenous communities in the region, with a history in this area dating back more than 10,000 years. Today, the Nation is composed of roughly 1,000 citizens and is state-recognized in Virginia, with its community centered around Bear Mountain in Amherst County. Historically, Monacan territory once covered much of Virginia, including a large portion of the Piedmont region, and Bear Mountain remains a central cultural and historic site for the community.
