The Maier Museum of Art at Randolph College houses an outstanding collection of American art, chiefly paintings, works on paper and photographs dating from the 19th and 20th centuries. The Maier is virtually unique among colleges and universities for its continual building of a collection focused on American art. The Museum’s strengths lie in American Impressionism and in early 20th-century Realism. Artists represented include Ben Shahn, Arthur B. Davies, John Sloan, Georgia O’Keeffe, Robert Rauschenberg, and Jacob Lawrence, among others. Located on the Randolph College campus and open to visitors year-round, the Museum offers changing exhibitions, rotating displays of the permanent collection, and educational programs.

The Maier Museum of art is a must see for art lovers visiting or living in Lynchburg. The Maier overlooks the beautiful campus of Randolph College. The museum possesses and displays a world class collection of American Art, from artists you have actually heard of, such as Georgia O'Keeffe, Thomas Cole, George Bellows, Mary Cassatt, and many more! The museum is constantly changing the exhibitions to incorporate new acquisitions and travelling works. In addition to exhibition which are changed about three times per year, the museum also hosts artist talks and other learning events throughout the year. Children and groups are welcomed by the museum educator or the knowledgeable docents. Admission is free!

A nice little museum on the backside of Randolph College. They have a rotating collection that is updated approximately every three months. Admission is free of charge and parking is a breeze. The gift shop is very reasonably priced.

I have visited the Maier Museum during several different exhibitions. Its repertoire includes original exhibitions (sometimes curated from Randolph College's art collection and other times curated from contemporary American art by artists around the country). Other times, the museum hosts traveling exhibitions. I have found most of the exhibitions to be very educational, and they almost always include eye-opening art that I had never seen before. Most staff members and volunteers know the stories behind many of the works of art on display, making the tours more well worth the time. The museum can be toured in well under an hour, although you could spend more time there asking questions about art on display.I also have observed volunteers giving tours to school children, and they know well how to adjust their explanations to the level of their audience. Because of this, it may be a good destination for a classroom or family outing.(Note: I used to work for Randolph College, which operates the Maier Museum, but I am employed elsewhere now.)
