The Legacy Museum of African American History was established through the Legacy Project, originally sponsored by the Lynchburg branch of the NAACP and incorporated as a nonprofit in 1995. The museum opened in 2000 after a community-led effort to restore a historic home into a space dedicated to preserving and sharing African American history and culture in the region.

The museum features rotating exhibits, oral histories, artifacts, and educational programs that highlight African American life, achievements, and experiences in Lynchburg and surrounding areas. Its mission is to foster understanding and appreciation of this history through exhibitions, lectures, workshops, and community engagement.
