Just twenty miles east of Lynchburg, The Appomattox Court House National Historical Park commemorates the heroic acts which took place in April of 1865 in this, the original village, to bring about the end of the Civil War. The walking tour allows you to see all buildings which are original to the site, and have been restored to their original condition. The highlight of the Park is the McLean House where Generals Lee and Grant crafted and signed the terms of surrender, bringing an end to the bloodiest chapter of U.S. history.

The area is immaculately kept and tour guides are enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Biggest takeaway at this historic site, in winning the American civil war, Union General Grant allowed Lee's defeated army to be paroled and disbanded in peace, free to return to their respective homes. This attitude did so much in successfully integrating the Confederate States back into the Union. The Allies after World War I should have learned from the US in that lesson when dictating harsh surrender terms of Germany...thus laying the seeds for World War II.

Come for the history, leave with all the ticks in VA. If the trail ain't mowed: don't go. We'll be picking ticks for days. Despite that annoyance, the park is beautiful. As a Civil War history lover, this is definitely one of the places I had to visit. I wasn't disappointed. EXCEPT for the ticks.

Always gorgeous. The living history programs are great, full of passion and information. The gift shop has a nice selection of period-inspired souvenirs for kids and adults. Ended up raining a ton today, but the staff was a huge help in getting me, my son and our stroller to the parking lot with as little water damage as possible.

I didn't know much about it and the guides are pretty awesome in explaining everything to you. They take it very seriously.Staff is nice and the grounds are the best. I have visited hundreds of national park grounds and this one is definitely on the top of my list.

We had a great time here. The park is well kept, and the staff are all very knowledgeable. I really enjoyed the 15 minute film, which was a good review for people not familiar with the end of the war. Our tour guide was excellent - he had several unique stories and didn't only focus on the war. I enjoyed hearing about the town's residents and their stories.
