Internationally acclaimed poet who was part of the Harlem Renaissance, Anne Spencer was the only black woman and the only Virginian included in the Norton Anthology of Modern American and British Poetry. On the beautiful grounds is Spencer’s writing cottage “Edan Kraal.” Many dignitaries have visited the house and gardens over the years. The house museum offers artifacts, memorabilia and lovely period antique furnishings, and is open for tours by appointment. The garden, which served as Spencer’s inspiration for much of her poetry, has been completely and authentically restored and is open without charge.

A wonderful place to visit. Tours are given by Anne Spencer's granddaughter who brings the house and garden to life. Anne and her husband Edward were remarkable people.

Beautiful gardens and historic home of Lynchburg's harlem renaissance poet Anne Spencer. A woman ahead of her time! The garden is open during daylight hours, but you have to call ahead to schedule a tour of the house. It's worth it!

My daughter and I visited and greatly enjoyed the tour of the home and gardens. Anne Spencer's grand-daughter led our tour and provided such heartwarming stories about her family. It is humbling to walk through a home that was resided in and visited by so many great artists. This is truly a national treasure.
