Drawing from its rich collection of artifacts and documents, this American Civil War Museum location is located 25 minutes east of Lynchburg and interweaves the story of the Confederate States government, the military, civilians, and enslaved and free African-Americans. Exhibits detail events leading up to and following the War. Visitors experience the “Appomattox moment” when the armies of two warring nations clashed at a rural crossroads in April of 1865. The words of Robert E. Lee’s final order to his troops can be heard surrounded by images and uniforms of those present at the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia. Of special interest are General Lee’s sword and the uniform that he wore to the meeting with Grant at Appomattox Court House. Visitors can explore the lives of soldiers, civilians and African-Americans, both during and after the War, with the interactive Wall of Faces.

Awesome little museum. The artifacts are numerous and well displayed. I found myself learning a lot about not only the ending of the American Civil War but about the events leading up to and during as well. I recommend this place if you are in the area and are interested in history.

A really great museum! My husband and I got in for free because of our military IDs, but had we had to pay the $12 I think I would have been a little more disappointed because it was kind of small. I feel like I really learned a lot about the Civil War though and a lot about Appomattox. We spent about an hour or two going through the whole thing. They had a lot of old flags and uniforms from the war. They also had a database where you could look to see if your relatives came through the Appomattox railroad yard and got a parole pass. The staff was extremely friendly and the little gift shop wasn't bad either. Overall it's a super informative museum and we had a great time!!

I LIKE THIS PLACE. So well done and I didn't feel it was biased for the North or the South. Life-sized figures of parents saying goodbye to their son brought everything into focus. Women's contributions are highlighted also, thank you. Many exhibits. Robert E. Lee's letter to his troupes about going home, his concession letter to Gen. Grant. Respect. Is. Everywhere. (Near Appomattox Courthouse village. Nice staff. Self-guided. Facilities.) Great history. I'm impressed!
