Richmond Symphony at Sweet Briar College

Members of the general public are welcome and encouraged to attend. Tickets are free for members of the campus community, as well as high school students, college students at other institutions, and children under 18 and can be secured at sbc.edu/symphony.

Under the baton of Jessica Rivero Altarriba, the program opens with Fanny Mendelssohn’s spirited “Overture” and the exuberant first movement of Felix Mendelssohn’s “Italian” symphony before turning to the rhythmic energy of Jessie Montgomery’s “Strum.” From the soaring lyricism of Mascagni’s “Cavalleria rusticana” to the supernatural drama of Mussorgsky’s “Night on Bald Mountain,” the concert explores the orchestra’s remarkable range of color and expression. The evening concludes with music from Grieg’s beloved “Peer Gynt,” including “Morning Mood,” “Solveig’s Song,” and the thrilling “In the Hall of the Mountain King.”
