National Alliance on Mental Health Illness Launches Chapter in Lynchburg, Virginia

February 5, 2025, Lynchburg, VA – The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) proudly announces the formation of its newest affiliate: NAMI Lynchburg. With 1 in 5 adults in the U.S. experiencing mental health challenges, this chapter will empower the community through free educational programs, peer-led support groups and outreach initiatives.

NAMI Lynchburg’s formation comes in response to findings from the Lynchburg Community Health Needs Assessment, which identified mental health services as a top priority for the region. NAMI Lynchburg offers NAMI’s evidence-based signature programs including Connections Support Group (support for those with a mental health diagnosis), Family-to-Family Educational Program (6-class series offering education and support for those with a loved one struggling with a mental health diagnosis), and Homefront (6-class series offering education and support for with loved ones who are veterans or active duty military) presented by trained leaders.

“Every community deserves accessible mental health support, and with the creation of NAMI Lynchburg, we’re bringing hope and resources closer to home for thousands of residents,” said Kathy Harkey, Executive Director of NAMI Virginia. “This chapter will be a cornerstone of empowerment and advocacy for individuals and families navigating mental health challenges.”

How to Get Involved
To celebrate the launch, NAMI Lynchburg will host a community open house event on March 18, 2025, at the Lynchburg Public Library (2315 Memorial Ave, Lynchburg, VA 24501) from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. This event will provide an opportunity to meet the team, learn about NAMI’s programs and discover ways to support mental health initiatives in the community.

“We encourage everyone—whether you’re a mental health advocate, provider, someone seeking support or simply interested in learning more about mental health—to join us at our launch event,” said Megan Franklin, NAMI Lynchburg – Steering Committee Chair.
Mental health supporters and those affected by mental illness can reduce the stigma, stay connected and support NAMI Lynchburg by liking the NAMI-Lynchburg Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/people/NAMI-Lynchburg/61564439617862/
