FreeHistoric Miller Claytor House
by Katheryn Brown
The little yellow house that sits in Riverside Park is the first collective preservation project in Lynchburg. Built in 1791 by tavern keeper John Miller, it was saved from demolition by a group of concerned citizens spearheaded by architect Stanhope Johnson. In 1935 the Lynchburg Historical Society was formed for the sole purpose of purchasing the building, dismantling it and moving it to a location dedicated to its restoration. Now owned and operated by the Lynchburg Historical Foundation, this historic jewel is Lynchburg’s only remaining 18th century townhouse. Learn about the rich history and lore of this simple home and where it future is going.
