In June of 1864, 200 Union cavalrymen set out from Lexington, Virginia, to destroy Confederate infrastructure and scout ahead of Major General David Hunter’s advancing Army of West Virginia. Under the co-command of two lieutenants, the raiders rode over 100 miles, tore up train tracks, cut telegraph wires, and gathered intelligence. The ride even represented the first time Union soldiers had entered Amherst, Appomattox, and Campbell Counties. An incredible feat, but was this daring raid a success?
