The arrival of winter brings with it the holidays, seasonal beverages and favorite sweaters. But it also brings just the right kind of weather to enjoy winter sports, like skiing, snowboarding and ice skating. In Lynchburg, there are opportunities to do all of those things and more.
Liberty Mountain Snowflex Centre
The Liberty Mountain Snowflex Centre is the destination of choice if you want to enjoy a cold-weather sporting activity in Lynchburg. Not only that, but Snowflex’s slopes are entirely snowless, too, so they can be enjoyed during all four seasons, not just in the wintertime.
Tubing
Snowflex includes a tubing run so that you can enjoy the exhilarating experience of speeding down the Liberty Mountain slope at 25-30 miles an hour. This tubing slope is made of Neveplast, a surface material that allows you to slide down the hill without the need for actual snow.
Skiing and Snowboarding
Snowflex offers an extensive snowboarding and skiing experience, featuring two inches of padded ground where beginners and pros alike can practice their moves. They can also customize the slope with moveable pipes, jumps and rails so you can experiment and learn. Furthermore, they offer lessons for people of all ages, taught by experienced trainers.
Barrick-Falwell Lodge
Snowflex also offers the convenience of a centerpiece building styled after an alpine lodge. In this lodge you can prepare for, take a break from or relax after enjoying your favorite winter sport. Here you can put up your feet, enjoy the scenery of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and sip on a favorite beverage!

Lahaye Ice Center
Donated by Drs. Tim and Beverly Lahaye in 2006, the Lahaye Ice Center is your go-to place in Lynchburg for ice sports.
Ice Skating
If you enjoy ice skating, Lahaye Ice Center is open to the public for practice, lessons and even summer camps. If you enjoy observing the sport, as well, Liberty has figure skating and synchronized skating teams that compete during the winter season. Just see their calendar for event and public use times.
Hockey
Hockey is another sporting opportunity at the Lahaye Ice Center. You can watch teams compete, play on a local league or even play casually during public hockey playing times. If you need equipment, you can rent or buy it from the Pro Shop inside the Ice Center.

Wintergreen Resort
Another place in Central Virginia that offers an exciting winter sports experience is Wintergreen Resort, located in the Appalachian mountains about an hour north of Lynchburg. They offer numerous sporting opportunities, among which are snowboarding, skiing and tubing, and they offer their lodge for dining, relaxing, shopping and events.

Rise Up Climbing
Another fun sport you can enjoy this winter that doesn’t even require snow or ice is scaling the climbing walls at Rise Up Climbing. They have 40-foot walls with adjustable handholds, along with a bouldering wall. Rise Up will work out every part of your body as you reach for that next handhold and defy gravity.
So strap on your skates, some skiing or snowboarding boots or a climbing harness and head over to one of these destinations! The time for winter sports is now, and these are some experiences we’re sure you’ll enjoy.
