It’s Virginia Cider Week! As a staple of the fall season, this drink couldn’t be more welcome in our homes. Fortunately, the Lynchburg and Central Virginia areas have plenty of orchards and cideries where you can get your fill of this delicious beverage. Here are some of our favorites.
Mama Crockett’s Donuts
Mama Crockett’s cider donuts quickly became a Lynchburg favorite when their food truck first started setting up in town. And now they have a store right here in Lynchburg on 5th Street! Not only do they make our favorite round pastries out of the delicious juice of apples (which means they’re healthy, right?), but they also sell the cider they use for their dough in-house. This cider is locally sourced from Nelson County, so it’s fresh, crisp and delicious!
Apocalypse Aleworks
A family-owned brewery, Apocalypse Aleworks has only been around for a few years, but it’s already making waves. They also recently established a cidery called Legacy Cider, with a commitment to brew with only local Virginia apples. They are located on Burnbridge Road in Forest, VA.
Morris Orchard
Located in Monroe, VA, Morris Orchard is a family-owned and operated farm. They bring in visitors to go apple-picking or shop at their store, and have a wide variety of apple types to choose from. They also fresh-press cider on-site September-December, and have been since the mid-1990s.
Johnson’s Orchards
Located in Bedford, VA, along the Peaks of Otter, Johnson’s Orchards is a family-owned farm that has been around for a hundred years, growing and selling fruit products to Central Virginia. They are partnered with the Peaks of Otter winery and also press fresh apples for cider. Johnson’s Orchards also offers field trip education in which they display their farming and cider-making techniques.
Blue Toad Cidery
Located in Roseland, VA, near the Wintergreen Resort, Blue Toad has a farm-to-tap cider barn where you can taste their specialty beverages. They also ship their cider products all over the east coast, so you can find your preferred beverage at a store near you.
Bold Rock
A popular name in cider in the Central Virginia area, Bold Rock has been brewing since 2012. They are located in Nellysford, VA, and their cider barn, affectionately called the “Chapel of Apple”, is a popular destination for cider lovers. You can also purchase their products at a local store.
Brew Ridge Tours
The original and only brew tour in Lynchburg, Brew Ridge Tours takes beer and cider lovers on day trips to visit local area breweries and taste their products. They are located on Tradewynd Drive in the Wyndhurst area.
Fall is a beautiful season that should be matched with beautiful experiences, and picking apples and drinking cider are two that we’re certain you’ll enjoy. Bon appetit!
