July means summer is in full swing, and so are the exciting events in the city! This month features two ways to celebrate Independence Day, as well as some performances that you won’t want to miss. See you there!
Independence Day at Poplar Forest
Place: Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest

What better place to celebrate the birth of America than at the summer home of the man who penned the Declaration of Independence? Here, you can experience a true colonial style celebration including a militia recruiting, artisans and a dramatic reading of the Declaration of Independence!
Admission to the Independence Day festivities is $10 for adults (ages 16+) and free for children (ages 15 and under).
Percival’s Island Firecracker 5 Mile Race
Place: Percival’s Island
Date: July 4, 8:00 am
Celebrate America with this Lynchburg classic! While Lynchburg is known as the “Hill City” this course is as flat as it gets. The course runs along the paved Blackwater Creek Trail, allowing runners a great view of both the river and the city.
My Way: A Musical Tribute to Frank Sinatra
Place: Academy Center of the Arts Warehouse Theatre
Dates: July 12-28 (various times)
Endstation Theatre Company is back for another exciting season, which concludes with a musical tribute to one of America’s most beloved performers, Frank Sinatra. The show follows Sinatra’s career from the 1950s through the 1990s and includes hits such as “Fly Me to the Moon”, “Chicago”, “New York, New York” and “That’s Life”.
Fake Plastic Creeps w/ Geek RVA
Place: The Glass House
Date: July 13, 7:00 pm
The Fake Plastic Creeps, a Radiohead Tribute band, and Geek RVA, a Smashing Pumpkins tribute are bringing 90s nostalgia to The Glass House on July 13. Tickets are $12 presale and $17 at the door, so purchase early!

Amy Grant, the first Contemporary Christian music artists to have a number 1 single on the Pop charts, is coming to the Academy this July. This event, organized by City Auditorium, is sure to be one you won’t forget.
Steve Miller Band & Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives

Music returns to Riverfront Park this Summer with this dynamic line up! Steve Miller calls this lineup “Classic Rock meets Classic Country.” This will be Steve Miller’s first time performing at Riverfront Park.
Academy Presents: Taj Mahal

One of the most prominent figures in late 20th century blues, singer/multi-instrumentalist TajMahal played an enormous role in revitalizing and preserving traditional acoustic blues. On July 27, he will take the stage in the Historic Academy Theater.

Brian McKnight has released over 30 albums and received 16 Grammy nominations. On June 14, 2019 he will release another album entitled “Bedtime Story”. Join the Academy as they bring this legendary performer to the stage for one night only.
2019 State Games of America
Place: Liberty University
Date: July 31-August 4
The State Games of America is an Olympic-style event featuring competition between State Games medal winners (gold, silver, bronze) from across the nation. This event is held every two years, on the odd years, and Lynchburg was chosen as the host city for this year’s games. Over 30 sports will be featured, and all are open to spectators!
