Mr. Jefferson’s Salon Series: Civil Discourse
May 7, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm$15.00
Is the civility Jefferson practiced in the late 18th and early 19th centuries possible or desirable today? Is civility a good thing?
Join Dr. Lori Britt, associate professor at James Madison’s (JMU) School of Communication Studies and director of JMU’s Institute for Constructive Advocacy and Dialogue; Dr. Andrea Douglas, executive director of the Jefferson School African American Heritage Center; Tom Walls, executive director of the Sorensen Institute for Political Leadership at the University of Virginia; and Stephanie Roark Keener (moderator), a member of the League of Women Voters of Lynchburg who recently facilitated a League conversation called “Sips & Civility: After #MeToo,” inside Jefferson’s villa for a discussion about what civility actually was in Jefferson’s time, as well as the limits of civility in today’s polarized political and social environments.
A reception of wine and light appetizers to follow. Reservations are required due to limited space available.
