December First Friday- Roaring Lynchburg: Social Life in 1925

December 6, 2024 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Free
  • « Peggy Haas Howell Organ Recital
  • Paint with Light! »

Step back in time to view life in the Hill City 100 years ago. In 1925, Lynchburg had a bustling population of around 30,000 and an economy built on tobacco, railroads, and manufacturing. Just like today, once residents were finished with their work, it was time to unwind and socialize. While the lights were bright to entice patrons on major thoroughfares, Prohibition led some people to secret corner speakeasies. The entertainment scene was booming with local and international performers. Social clubs, dances, sports and recreational activities filled public and private spaces across our seven hills. Discover how the city’s diverse population navigated the social landscape of 1925.

Join curator Crystal Diff and guest curators Keith Harvey and Noelle Beverly for guided exhibit talks throughout the opening reception, and stay for 1920s holiday craft making for all ages. Your holiday crafts can help decorate our 1920s Christmas tree, or you can always take them home!
The “Roaring Lynchburg” exhibit will remain on display at the Lynchburg Museum (901 Court Street) through March 31, 2025. Admission is always free. See LynchburgMuseum.org for open days and hours, as well as other special events, programs, and guided tours throughout the year.

Please note, the Lynchburg Museum’s ADA entrance is currently being renovated and may be inaccessible at times in the coming months. Please call before visiting to ensure entry.
