Al Diaz in Action
September 1 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Is graffiti art or vandalism? Where do we draw lines when it comes to “freedom of expression?”
Drop by the Maier Museum of Art between 1 pm – 4 pm to watch visiting artist, Al Diaz, graffiti the walls of the museum and to learn about his five decade career writing on public spaces and thwarting authorities. The work is part of the 107th Exhibition of Contemporary Art, “Zeitgeist: The Art Scene of Teenage Basquiat,” which opens September 14.
Al Diaz is a first-generation NYC subway graffiti artist who later became a text-oriented street artist. He is well known for his collaboration with Jean Michel Basquiat on SAMO©, graffiti that appeared in lower Manhattan in the late 1970s. In his current work, included in Zeitgeist, Diaz appropriates signs posted throughout the NYC subway system to create clever anagrams.
