At several times throughout our history, Lynchburg ranked as one of the wealthiest communities per-capita in the nation. This affluence fueled construction of some very extraordinary buildings giving our downtown an eclectic array of 19th and 20th century structures in a wide variety of architectural styles.

As the city prospered, new buildings were built and others remodeled to reflect changing tastes and needs. This tour will focus on the downtown area’s rich architectural fabric including structures that were built for residential, commercial, civil and spiritual use. Some of the architectural styles include Federal, Greek Revival, Italianate, Gothic, Romanesque and Colonial Revivals, Beaux Arts Classicism, Art Deco and Art Moderne.

Self-guided tours available via the Lynchburg Visitor Center located at 216 12th Street or call (800) 732-5821 for more information.
