Theodore Robinson began his professional studies in New York in 1874, where he attended the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League. There, he became acquainted with Winslow Homer, who influenced him to make rural life his main subject matter. Robinson subsequently studied in Paris and in Venice. In 1884 he traveled to France where he became part of the circle of Impressionist painters and settled in the village of Giverny, Claude Monet’s home, in 1888. Robinson remained in France until 1892, when he returned to New York.
