The following list of events only scratches the surface of the possible things to do to celebrate the holiday season in Lynchburg.
Shop the Mistletoe Market
Dates: Saturdays from November 28 to December 19, 7:00 a.m to 3:00 p.m.
On the four Saturdays leading up to December 25, the Lynchburg Community Market sets up a one-stop shop for all of your shopping needs. These mornings include seasonal produce, fresh greenery, local shops and even free gift wrapping! As an additional treat, Mr. and Mrs. Claus will make time in their busy schedule to stop by on December 5th and 12th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. On these days, visitors can also enjoy horse drawn carriage rides through the city.
Experience Charles Dicken’s A Christmas Carol
Dates: December 1, 2, 8, 9, 10, 14, 15, 16
Join the Renaissance Theatre, Lynchburg’s oldest community theatre, as they bring the classic tale of Ebenezer Scrooge to life on stage. Featuring a local cast, this show is sure to delight the entire family. Tickets are available on eTix when available for purchase.
Historic Holiday Walking Tour
Date: December 9 and 16 at 2:00 p.m.
Take a holiday walking tour of Lynchburg’s first (out of seven!) Historic District. The tour will begin at the Lynchburg Visitor Center at 216 12th Street (the corner of 12th and Church Streets) and will highlight selected homes on Diamond Hill’s Washington Street. As you walk, your guide will give you an intimate glimpse of this neighborhood decorated for the Holiday and weave in tales of the iconic homes and their noteworthy owners.

Take a Candlelight Tour of Thomas Jefferson’s House
Thursdays, December 7 & 14 at 5:30 p.m.
Fridays & Saturdays, December 1 & 2, 8 & 9, and 15 & 16 at 5:30 p.m. & 6:30 p.m.
Take in the history of Poplar Forest with a magical candlelit tour of Jefferson’s villa retreat, dressed for the holidays. These annual and very popular after-hours tours offer an intimate look at what Thomas Jefferson and his family’s evenings might have been like. As visitors walk through the octagonal house, they’ll be entertained by anecdotes gathered from Jefferson’s letters and diaries. Tickets can be purchased by visiting the Poplar Forest website, or by calling the Museum Shop at 434-534-8120.
Take the Family Ice Skating

The LaHaye Ice Center is open year-round but there is something magical about skating during the holiday season. Bundle up and enjoy a day on the ice. General admission and skate rental is only $10, making this a great family outing. If you own your own skates, take advantage of general admission for only $6.
Celebration of Lights
Dates: December 1 - January 1, 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Join Lynchburg Parks and Recreation as they light up Riverside Park for the second annual Celebration of Lights! This free, family-friendly attraction is open nightly and includes fun light displays as you drive through Riverside Park. The theme for this year’s Celebration of Lights is “Lynchburg Winter Wonderland.” A special schedule of events throughout the month, includes a Pedestrian Night allowing the community to walk through Riverside Park and slowly take in the ambiance of lit displays, a Glow Ride encouraging cyclists to decorate their bikes and ride through the park, and a magical night with hot cocoa, horses, and carriage rides hosted by Lexington Carriage Company. Sip on a cup of hot chocolate, and sink into the experience.
